A New Perspective

Why is this book coming out?

In 2004 we will celebrate the centenary of Brandt's birth. As well as a major exhibition at the V&A and symposium on Brandt, we saw it fitting that he should be remembered with an important publication.

I have the old Perspective of Nudes 1961, so what is different?

Well, it has many more pictures! We have put in pretty much his whole collection. The Perspectives from 1961 contains 90 plates. A New Perspective will add pictures not seen in this edition which were in the rather badly printed Nudes 1945-80 by Gordon Fraser which contains 100.

What about the text?

Mark Hayworth-Booth, curator & photographic historian at the V&A Museum in London. He is one of the foremost experts on Brandt and worked closely with him during his lifetime.

Who is the printer?

The highly esteemed Drukkerij Calff & Meischke in Amsterdam. We are printing on Monadnock paper, and this printer is considered to be the best printer in the world for this paper by the manufacturer.

Who is the designer?

Major British designer, David Pocknell.

Why is the deluxe edition print in platinum and not silver?

Although Brandt never worked in platinum, we have found that the richness of platinum gives a lustre to his nudes that is a perfect accompaniment to this book.

What is the platinum print?

If you have reached this page, then you have seen it. It's the one you saw on the main page. See more about the platinum technique here.

Are these all Brandt's nudes?

No. This book is not meant to be exhaustive, but it is as complete as will ever be published. There are several nudes that have not been included for various reasons, either because Brandt had himself chosen not to print them or the subject being too similar to other more important images. In a couple of instances we have not included out of focus negatives which you really don't want to see!

Why is the book so expensive?

Printing at this quality on Monadnock Astrolite, considered to be some of the best paper in the world, with one of the world's best printers, is costly.

Can I buy this in the shops?

No, but It can be ordered through the Photographer's Gallery in London, the Edwynn Houk Gallery in New York and the Karsten Greve Gallery in Paris. Simplest is to buy online for instant delivery.

Is that really the cover of the book on your website?

This is the real thing. It looks stunning.o
