Brassai (Gyula Halsz 1899-1984)
Born in Hungary, but he adopted France as his homeland. In contrast to Brandt, his early years in Paris were as a newspaper reporter.
But, Brassai is recognised mainly for his photos of Paris during the night. In 1930 he began photographing Paris at night with an insatiable eye, surveying the high and low life of the glittering city.
Brassai's frequent nocturnal searchings were published as Paris by Night by Charles Peignot in 1932 which in turn encouraged the publication of Bill Brandt's more sinister London at Night in 1936.
Brassai's photographs depict an appreciation of Parisian architecture and culture. Pattern and perspective are reversed and the imagery of night time in a city comes to life.
Brassai and Brandt were friends during the 1970s and similarities can be found between their works.
