Brandt's Albuquerque show - March 28th 2008

Having seen a comprehensive exhibition of his prints not so long ago, I can say to see the real thing is truly inspiring stuff. Of course some people think he couldn't print, and advocates of the zone system may be disappointed, but if passion, commitment and poetry is what appeals to you, it's there in abundance." - subscriber to APUG forum

No Such Thing As Society: Photography in Britain 1967-87
21 March 2008

It was a time of extraordinary changes. Jon Savage of The Guardian on a photography show that captures 20 turbulent years of British life

The images tell of the human cost. The devastation they record recalls Bill Brandt's photographs of Britain in the 1930s, or the work of the crusading photojournalist WF Lestrange in the same period.

"Private and Public: Class, Personality, Politics, and Landscape in British Photography." The exhibition explores the "special qualities" of the British, including concepts of class, individuality, the city and the countryside.

Works by Bill Brandt are part of the exhibition. Stanford Professor of History Peter Stansky calls Brandt "perhaps the greatest British photographer of the 20th century." During the 1930s, Brandt's photographs of social observation captured images of how the different classes lived. Later he created vivid images of London during the Second World War. Brandt also made portraits of English writers and artists and, later in his career, concentrated on near-abstract photographs of nudes.

Corkin Gallery - The Presence of Portraits

A visit to "The Presence of Portraits" at the Corkin Gallery in the Distillery District – basically a Greatest Hits collection culled from the gallery's archives – goes a fair way to underscore the photographic portrait's ability to mythologize the most humdrum of working stiffs and to convey iconic status to images of the rich, powerful and famous.

The Gravure 'Prints' that aren't
1 March 2008

We have recently been made aware of a seller on Ebay purporting to sell 'original' gravure prints made by Bill Brandt and printed pre 1950. As far as we are aware there are no authorised editions of gravure prints by Bill Brandt. Any items that are purchased from this Ebay seller are simply sheets torn from an original edition of Shadow of Light, published in the 1960s. BEWARE
