The Nude: A Centenary Exhibition - Edwynn Houk Gallery, NY The studies are quirkily, not conventionally, erotic. Early on, he tended to photograph his nudes melodramatically in dark, sparsely furnished interiors, producing works like the cleverly lighted "Campden Hill, 1949," in which the head and gracefully curved back of a seated nude appears in the foreground as she gazes toward a bed in the deep interior. In later pictures, he made near-abstractions of bodies, closing in on parts, distorted or exaggerated by odd angles of focus and perspective and lighted for sharp contrasts of black and white.Their artifice blends with that of the natural world to create a poet's vision. Art prices are now at their highest levels since the speculative bubble burst back in 1990. If prices advance at the same pace as in 2004, they could surpass November 1990 highs by November 2005, thus taking art market prices to unprecedented levels. The index for the main art movement showing trends from 1990 - Dec 2004 shows Contemporary Photographs up 57%. Holding Brandt prints over the period 1997 to 2004 would show a gain of 248%.
